Creating a marketing plan for your business

In simple terms, a marketing plan outlines how you’re going to put your growth strategy into practice. The marketing plan makes sure everyone involved in the business understands what you’re attempting to do and what they are required to do to make it happen.

Gather information about your business and customers

The concept of this guide is that you must acquire information about your company and gain an understanding of how current and prospective customers think and make buying decisions. So set aside a day to work on your marketing strategy and create some goals.

By the end of the day, you should:

  • Have collated information about the needs and wants of existing and potential customers
  • Have facilitated  a discussion about the marketing position your business should be in
  • Know the USPs that your business has and how to take advantage of these
  • Understand how to differentiate your business from competitors
  • Produce a marketing plan

Dedicate to your customers

Businesses that are successful all  have two things in common. They have a thorough awareness of their customer’s needs and are completely dedicated to their customers.

The businesses go through a process to know the following:

  • Who their customers are
  • Their customers’ perception of the company and the customers’ needs
  • How to keep attracting customers back again and again

Writing a marketing plan for your business

Below are key areas to consider when making a marketing plan.

  1. Include your targets and objectives for the next 12 months. What are you trying to achieve?
  2. Outline a budget and any deadlines which can help you focus on priorities and allow you to commit to achieving them.
  3. Communicate with existing and potential customers. To maintain customer awareness, outline when and how you will do this.
  4. Set out how you will reach new customers and which methods you’ll use. This includes social media, your website, newsletters, mailings, calls, events, signage etc.
  5. Create a schedule of marketing activities and start with key dates and time your marketing efforts around these important dates.
